When a dream team makes incredible wine, be prepared to pay for it. Unless you pick up this ridiculous B.P.O deal. How ridiculous? You be the judge. Jim  Dierberg's Santa Ynez Valley Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards are wine insider's terroir. Dierberg's Burgundian varietals are the envy of the California winemaking fraternity. But it took Dierberg's  farmer's feel for great land to pull the trigger on buying "Happy Valley" as the vineyards nestled in the San Rafael Mountains are called. The highest, hottest and at a peak of 1500 feet, probably the steepest in the appellation, his Star Lane Vineyards there experience 60 degree temperature swings from a high of plus 100 degrees to below 50 degrees Farenheit. This immense diurnal shift brings a layered richness to his incredible Bordeaux varietals that convinced Cali wine pioneer David Ramey, consulting winemaker on 95 plus Cabs priced in triple-digits from Dominus, Chalk Hill and Rudd, to work with the Star Lane fruit.

2005 Star Lane "Astral" Cabernet Sauvignon displays incredibly rich, dense fruit  concentration, huge, lush tannins that frame tightly layered cassis, blackberry, plum, coffee, chocolate, spice, vanilla and smoke flavours. Sporting a suppleness that belies its youth, the wine is drinking beautifully now.  93 Points from Conoisseur Guide To California Wine-CGCW for this three block blend of 98% Cabernet, 2% Petite Verdotgrapes. The regular 2005 Star Lane Cab was itself a Wine Spectator Top 100 Wine Of The Year In 2008. Astral's price is $119.99 a bottle before we went to work and knocked off 46% for our price of $64.99, the B.P.O.-best price online. This Cali Bordeaux blend is so big and yet full of finesse, it reminds us of why Napa bested the Bordeaux First Growth in the famed "Judgment Of Paris" blind tasting. A winemaking great, working with great terroir's beautiful fruit has produced an insider's gem, at 46% Saving. But you be the judge.

TASTING NOTES

93 Points Conoisseur Guide To California Wine

Backing up to the lower slopes of the San Rafael Mountains which loom high above the ranch, Star Lane features a unique range of weathered sand, gravel and alluvial cobbles over a clay/loam subsoil. With both excellent drainage and good water holding capacity in the subsoil, these conditions mimic those of the best properties of Bordeaux and make an ideal home for the Cabernet Sauvignon planted on the estate's steep hillsides and canyon floor. Three blocks planted at the summit and along the western ridge of the ranch enjoy a very narrow diurnal temperature fluctuation and consistently produce the lush core of the Star Lane blend. A small bench land section near the mouth of the canyon lends the wine backbone and nerve. A steep, south facing section of Petit Verdot bring aromatic complexity and intensity to the final blend. "Star Lane's basic Cabernet earned glowing praise, and this, its fancier sibling, does the same. Big, optimally ripened and positively plush on the palate, it delivers a wealth of luscious, curranty fruit with the sweet, vanilla-bean trappings of first-rate oak making it all the more enticing. It is so fruity that its late-arriving tannins come as a surprise reminder that it is still very young, and a better wine will yet await the collector who can exercise five years of patience."
