December Earthquake Hits Christchurch In New Zealand by Pat Regan. Two powerful earthquakes have shaken the New Zealand city of Christchurch again, sending residents hurrying from buildings and causing damage. The first 5.8 earthquake struck at 1358 local time (0058 GMT), the US Geological Survey said. A second of comparable magnitude hit 80 minutes later.
